Describe someone you admire who is much older than you.
You should say:
who this person is
how long you have known him/ her
what qualities he/ she has
and say why you admire him/ her.
I truly admire the director of my company, because she is an extremely successful woman with her own fashion business. I have been working for her company for a little under a year and a half, and she has inspired me from day one.
I believe Ms Huang is an excellent role model for all of my colleagues and I. Having gained a wealth of experience at a young age, she started her company at 27. Since then, she has opened several branches of the business in different cities in China, and recently she has opened offices in major global cities outside China, including London, Paris and New York.
Ms Huang is a driven, determined woman who has risen to the top of her industry through hard work. She managed this impressive success through her own qualities, not by inheriting money or having help from others. As a woman, she has had a hard time navigating a male-dominated industry. Any woman in her position could justifiably be a proud figure, distanced from her staff. However, Ms Huang is always kind, gentle and attentive towards every individual she meets.
I admire Ms Huang’s artistic vision and her determination to make a difference to the position of women in the fashion industry. Her influence has caused ripples of change that will affect people for years to come.
Describe a famous person you want to meet, who is in the news.
You should say:
who the person is
how do you know him
why he is in the news
why do you want to meet him.
One person I’d really like to meet is the entrepreneur, Jack Ma. He is the founder and chairman of Alibaba, which runs websites such as Taobao and TMall. He’s the richest man in mainland China and is worth not just millions, but billions of dollars!
I first heard about Jack Ma when I saw him on the news on TV. His company is talked about a lot as so many people use their products on a daily basis and because they are making so much money. Nowadays he is not just a celebrity in China, but is known all over the world, he’s a bit like the Chinese Bill Gates.
Recently, he has been in the news because of an advertisement his company placed, asking for an attractive girl to keep up people’s morale in the office. It hit the headlines as it was seen as being sexist and misogynistic. Jack Ma had to go on TV to defend the advert and play down the story, saying it was just a bit of fun.
I’d love to meet him because he comes across as a nice guy when I see him in interviews. Even though he is filthy rich, he still seems very down-to-earth and uses a lot of his money for philanthropic acts, such as donating to education, health care and environmental causes. He also used to be an English teacher back in the day and his English is top-notch, so maybe he could give me some tips!
Describe one of your best friends.
You should say:
what he/she is like
how you know him/her
what you do when you are together
and explain why he/she is one of your best friends.
A dear friend of mine is my childhood friend, Roger. We met at age 6 in a school class when he sat beside me. Roger was always so enthusiastic; he would raise his hand even though he did not know the answer. So, I would give him a hand by whispering my answers to him. He would flash his big smile at me and bounce out of his chair to respond to our teacher. But he was still a true friend and would not raise his hand the next time to give me a chance. Sometimes, he even pulled my hand into the air and shouted that I had the answer. I suppose he had enough enthusiasm for the both of us.
As we have grown older, we have spent more time playing video games and doing homework together than in classes. He lives across town and goes to a different school. But we are able to see one another on weekends. During the week we play online games with each other. His enthusiasm still keeps our friendship going. Roger is the one always finding new games and coming to my house to hang out and study together.
I am the lazy friend. Without Roger pushing, I would probably not hang out with anyone. His excitement for doing everything we can together makes our time interesting. Of course, I offer something too, helping him with some parts of his homework. But he is the one helping me to come out of my shell.
Describe a country you’d like to travel to.
You should say:
where it is
when you are going to go there
what you want to do there
and explain why you want to go there.
I have to say it’s always been a dream of mine to go to Egypt, in North Africa. As it’s so far away, I kind of assumed it must cost an arm and a leg to get there and it would be out of reach, but actually a flight doesn’t cost as much as you may think.
Hopefully I can work hard and save up a lot of money and travel there soon. As well as paying for flights, I’ll need some spending money to buy food and souvenirs. My goal is to go either next summer or the summer after that.
I’ve been fascinated by Egypt ever since I was a kid. We learned about the ancient Egyptians in school and even though they died out a long time ago, a lot of the buildings and temples have survived. I’ve seen a lot of Egypt on the TV, in books and on the internet, but I really want to go there and experience the country for myself.
There is so much to tick off the list, but my first stop would definitely be the capital, Cairo. It has the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx, which are symbols of Egypt, as well as Tutankhamen’s tomb. As they are so old, a lot of these landmarks are very mysterious and out of the ordinary.
After Cairo I would like to ride camels in the desert and sail down the Nile river in a boat. It’s one of the longest rivers in the world and would be an unforgettable experience.
Describe a street you know well.
You should say:
where it is
what are the main buildings around
how often you go there
and explain how you feel about this street.
The first place that springs to mind is Nanluoguxiang, in Beijing. It’s one of the most well known streets in the capital of China, with hundreds, if not thousands of tourists every day!
It’s in the centre of Beijing, just north of the Forbidden City and close to the Drum Tower and the Bell Tower. Another place of interest close by is Houhai Lake. I think it’s an old hutong, so most of the buildings around Nanluoguxiang are only one or two stories high and are either shops, restaurants or bars. There are also loads of street vendors selling cheap stuff, often just novelty items for tourists to waste their money on.
I don’t go there very often, in fact I try to avoid Nanluoguxiang if possible as it’s not my scene. It gets far too busy and makes me feel claustrophobic, plus the bars and restaurants are too expensive. On the rare occasions I do go, it is usually to show people who are visiting Beijing and a short time there reminds me why I don’t like it.
Overall, my feelings towards the street are not very positive. When I first went there as a tourist I loved it. I felt like a kid in a candy shop with all the souvenirs, snacks and cool bars with live music. But as someone who lives in Beijing, the idea of going to Nanluoguxiang fills me with dread and I’d much rather spend my time in a less commercialised street or Hutong.
