  15. Remember to Ask for Help

  Successful people aren’t afraid to ask others for help. Don’t be afraid to seek help from loving, wise, and caring people.

  The sun has begun to set and I hang up the smile I’ve worn all day, though I will make sure it is the first thing I put back on in the morning just in case it is “that day.” I want her to see me at my very best.

And sometimes I smile, and sometimes that smile will turn into asnicker, and then often that snicker will turn into a burst of laughter.

  And then there are times I get that lump in my throat and that tight feeling in my chest, and sometimes that feeling overwhelms me and begins to turn into a tear, and often that tear multiplies itself and I can no longer fight the feeling and I lose the battle. Then somehow through either the joy or the sadness I drift and find myself asleep. Then the dreams begin and keep me company until my new day arrives.

  When I awake it’s with such excitement because I tell myself this could be the day that every other day has led up to and the first day of the rest of my life. I quickly don my smile because I do so want her to see me at my very best. Then I look out the window because, even though I know it’s dawn, I still have to confirm I’ve been given another chance to find her.

Then, from that moment, nothing that I eat will ever taste the same because she’ll bring out the simplest beauties in everything I see, taste, smell, hear, or touch.

And as I wait behind this angel with all the frustrated people who are in such a hurry with their busy lives, I will find myself with such blessed extra time. Just enough time to start a conversation with this beautiful vision standing in front of me that I might not otherwise have noticed, but, because of a “price check on register 5,” I was able to find her.

  The mind is a powerful thing, and in a nanosecond, it can elevate or crush our mood. There’s a real problem when we start buying into the negative thoughts we have about ourselves。

  Negative thoughts conjures up bad feelings and hooks you into believing that what those old tapes in your head are playing is actually true. In short, it brings your focus to your failures, and that gets you nowhere。

  消極的想法會(huì)帶來(lái)不好的`感受,在那腦海中不斷的像老式磁帶一般重復(fù),也會(huì)讓你信以為真。簡(jiǎn)而言之,這會(huì)讓你把注意力全部放在失敗的事情上,會(huì)讓你徹底迷失自己。

  1. Live in the moment活在當(dāng)下

  Self-talk is so subtle that we often don’t notice its effect on our mood and belief systems. Key things to notice are “if only or “what if” statements: the former keep you stuck in the past with regret, while the latter keep you fearful of the future. There is nothing you can do about the past, and the future isn’t here yet, so stay in the present moment。

  If we want to change the negative tapes playing in our heads, we have to visualize ourselves positively—that means seeing yourself non-judgmentally. Picture accepting yourself. How would that look? Draw a picture in your mind and expand on it。

  如果要換掉腦海中不斷播放的消極磁帶,我們就要看到自己身上積極的一面,也就是說(shuō)不帶評(píng)判的看看自己。在內(nèi)心細(xì)細(xì)描述客觀接受自己會(huì)是什么的畫面。細(xì)細(xì)畫出心中所想,那會(huì)是什么樣?

  3. Recognize that actions always follow beliefs要認(rèn)識(shí)到行為由信念指引

  Whatever you believe, you’ll experience more of, and you’ll also find yourself behaving in ways that are congruent with your beliefs. So, start believing the best about yourself: act as if you believe that you’re a valuable and worthy person。

  不管你是否相信,你以后的人生會(huì)經(jīng)歷更多,也會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)自己的行為和信念是相輔相成的。所以要開始相信自己最好的一面:相信自己是一個(gè)有價(jià)值的人,然后開始行動(dòng)吧。

  4. Pay attention to triggers留神那些“導(dǎo)火索”

  Triggers are anything that can start the old tapes playing. If a certain person is a trigger for you, set boundaries with them。導(dǎo)火索可以使任何讓腦海中消極磁帶播放的人。如果某個(gè)人是你的導(dǎo)火索,那么就遠(yuǎn)離他們。

  5. Develop positive counterstatements to refute negative self-talk積極反駁內(nèi)心那些消極的聲音

  Instead of always putting yourself down in your head, think of some things you actually like about yourself. What are your strengths, what are you good at? Keep your counterstatements in the here-and-now, instead of saying “I’m not good enough” try saying, “I am capable. I’m good at ______. I accept myself the way I am!

  與其在腦海中一味的打壓自己,還不如想想你到底喜歡自己什么樣子。你的強(qiáng)項(xiàng)是什么,特長(zhǎng)是什么?與其說(shuō)“我不夠好”,不如現(xiàn)在就開始說(shuō)這句正能量的話語(yǔ):“我有能力,我擅長(zhǎng)....,我喜歡現(xiàn)在的自己!

  Thinking poorly about ourselves gets us nowhere and is extremely self-limiting. Decide today to turn off the negative self-talk channel in your mind and develop your true potential。

  妄自菲薄只會(huì)讓自己迷失方向,同時(shí)限制自身發(fā)展。從今天開始就關(guān)掉內(nèi)心的消極頻道,挖掘自身的潛力吧。

  Strength is not always about pure physical strength. Rather, it is about willpower. Discipline. Drive. It is about the capacity to get things done.

  I know some people who are intellectually strong, but they get very little done in their jobs. And I know others who find work extremely challenging, but are able to move mountains by their sheer drive and hard work.

  More interesting, is that these productive hard-workers often don’t even notice the load. Bystanders are not only amazed, but often ask, “How do you do it?”

  Self-Imposed Limits

  What I have observed is that most people impose their own limits. They limit their output based on self-framed constraints of their capabilities and strengths. Sometimes these boundaries are based on past experiences. Sometimes they are based on perceived capacities. Sometimes these limits are based on nothing.

  據(jù)我所觀察,很多人都是自己強(qiáng)加給自己的局限性。他們有時(shí)候根據(jù)能力和力量自我設(shè)定了他們的局限,有時(shí)候根據(jù)過(guò)去的經(jīng)歷設(shè)定一些邊界,還有的根據(jù)想象中的能力設(shè)定,還有些則毫無(wú)任何根據(jù)就限定了自己的力量。

  I can’t do that. (Why?)

  That is too much for me. (How do you know?)

  I can’t put in that much effort. (What would happen if you did?)

  I am not smart enough to solve that. (Can you be sure if you haven’t tried?)

  So, how do we break through these limits? How do we get stronger?

  Pushing It…

  Many people are going through the motions, but are nowhere near their limits.

  很多人都做出了實(shí)際行動(dòng),但是從來(lái)就沒(méi)有到達(dá)他們的極限。

  If you want to be stronger, you have to push your boundaries.

  如果你想變得更加強(qiáng)大,你就要打破你的局限。

  Pushing it is what it takes to increase your limits. In the gym, bodybuilders discovered this long ago. But, the same principle is true when it comes to inner strength. Discipline and drive.

  Want to test your limits? Push yourself. Test your self-perceived constraints to see how accurate they are. Make sure your goals are slightly beyond what you think can be achieved.

  2. Enjoy the small things

  Take walks more often. Stop and look at a babbling brook. Sit in an oversized chair at Barnes & Noble and read a great book. Observe an elderly couple holding hands. Life is made up of these small and seemingly insignificant things. They aren’t insignificant. Be sure to take the time to appreciate them.

  4. Be confident in who you are

You can never see any improvement in your life if you stick to your comfort zone. We all need a healthy dose of normal stress in our lives, after all. We can only see what we’re really capable of if we make the effort to go over our pre-conceived limits. Don’t limit the challenges you encounter in life - challenge the limits that your “l(fā)izard brain” crafted instead:

  I do not know who wrote those words, but I have always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want to make it. We can take the mysterious, hazy future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, just as a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.

  We are all in the position of the farmer. If we plant a good seed, we reap a good harvest. If our seed is poor and full of weeds, we reap a useless crop. If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.

  I want the future to be better than the past. I don’t want it contaminated by the mistakes and errors with which history is filled. We should all be concerned about the future because that is where we will spend the remainder of our lives.

  The past is gone and static. Nothing we can do will change it. The future is before us and dynamic. Everything we do will affect it. Each day brings with it new frontiers, in our homes and in our business, if we only recognize them. We are just at the beginning of the progress in every field of human endeavor.

  There is no better school than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve my performance next time. Whenever I am struck down, in the future, by any terrible defeat, I will inquire of myself, after the first pain has passed, how I can turn that adversity into good. What a great opportunity that moment may present……to take the bitter root I am holding and transform it into fragrant garden of flowers.

  Habits are powerful factors in our lives. Because they are consistent, often unconscious patterns, they constantly, daily, express our character and produce our effectiveness or ineffectiveness.

  As Horace Mann, the great educator, once said, “Habits are like a cable. We weave a strand of it everyday and soon it cannot be broken.” I personally do not agree with the last part of his expression. I know habits can be learned and unlearned. But I also know it isn't a quick fix. It involves a process and a tremendous commitment.

  Those of us who watched the lunar voyage of Apollo 11 were transfixed as we saw the first men walk on the moon and return to earth. But to get there, those astronauts literally had to break out of the tremendous gravity pull of the earth. More energy was spent in the first few minutes of lift-off, in the first few miles of travel, than was used over the next several days to travel half a million miles.

  Habits, too, have tremendous gravity pull- more than most people realize or would admit. Breaking deeply imbedded habitual tendencies such as procrastination, impatience, criticalness, or selfishness that violate basic principles of human effectiveness involves more than a little willpower and a few minor changes in our lives. “Lift off” takes a tremendous effort, but once we break out of the gravity pull, our freedom takes on a whole new dimension.

  Like any natural force, gravity pull can work with us or against us. The gravity pull of some of our habits may currently be keeping us from going where we want to go. But it is also gravity pull that keeps our world together, that keeps the planets in their orbits and our universe in order. It is a powerful force, and if we use it effectively, we can use the gravity pull of habit to create the cohesiveness and order necessary to establish effectiveness in our lives.

  我不是人妖,我就是妖

  對(duì)于自己的農(nóng)村背景,周思成沒(méi)有絲毫隱諱。出生在湖南醴陵的他,童年雖清苦,卻不乏苦中作樂(lè)的心態(tài)。他曾經(jīng)在黑夜中點(diǎn)亮煤油燈,在蒸騰起的煙霧中把自己臆想成“白素貞”;也因?yàn)槿f(wàn)分期待傘花飄落的美景,而試圖在鞭炮中多塞幾把小降落傘,結(jié)果笨重地飛不起來(lái)。

  在現(xiàn)在的周思成看來(lái),這種原始的快樂(lè)依舊散發(fā)著土腥氣,而之所以如今的自己變得時(shí)尚新潮,跟父親當(dāng)年的“高瞻遠(yuǎn)矚”不無(wú)關(guān)系。在父親看來(lái),徹底跟土氣告別的方式只有一種,就是努力接近一切跟洋氣有關(guān)的物件。在鋼琴,笛子,小提琴中,父子二人選擇了小提琴。上世紀(jì)九十年代,一把小提琴只要五十塊錢,而一堂課也只要八塊錢,能花費(fèi)相對(duì)較少的代價(jià)步入“洋氣”的殿堂,周思成滿心歡喜。

  為了給小提琴找個(gè)搭調(diào)的伙伴,周思成又學(xué)起了拉丁舞,沒(méi)想到一學(xué)便“泥足深陷”,無(wú)法自拔。但當(dāng)他想敲開北京舞蹈附中的大門,繼續(xù)“舞男”夢(mèng)想的時(shí)候,卻因?yàn)榻蹩量痰倪x材標(biāo)準(zhǔn)被拒之門外,“他們要求下半身要比上半身長(zhǎng)12.5厘米 但是我是長(zhǎng)10厘米!

  2.5厘米的差距,斷送了周思成的“舞男夢(mèng)”。他只能悻悻地回到家鄉(xiāng),抱著成為一名美聲歌唱家的殘念,做回一名普通的高中生。但命運(yùn)之神并沒(méi)有就此止步,高一那年的一次晚會(huì)上,周思成一個(gè)人組織排演了八個(gè)節(jié)目,超大的工作強(qiáng)度,每天聲嘶力竭地排練,使他得了嚴(yán)重的聲帶炎,手術(shù)之后他被告知三年都不能講話,唱美聲的夢(mèng)想隨之灰飛煙滅。

  被打倒的周思成似乎習(xí)慣了命運(yùn)的捉弄,爬起來(lái)繼續(xù)把不能實(shí)現(xiàn)的夢(mèng)想轉(zhuǎn)化成平日的愛(ài)好。雖然嗓子不能發(fā)聲,但肢體依舊靈活,他參加了高中的舞蹈隊(duì),卻因?yàn)閷W(xué)習(xí)成績(jī)好遭人排擠;他試圖與學(xué)習(xí)成績(jī)好的同學(xué)為伍,卻反倒因?yàn)樘杼帽或?qū)逐。

  因?yàn)槭中g(shù)后需要注射抗生素的緣故,高中時(shí)的周思成體重一下子飆到一百六十多斤,一個(gè)不會(huì)說(shuō)話的.“土肥圓”,卻硬是當(dāng)上了學(xué)校的文藝部長(zhǎng)、報(bào)社總編、文學(xué)社長(zhǎng),甚至廣播站長(zhǎng)。

  他標(biāo)榜自己就是天才,因?yàn)樗偸歉鷦e人不一樣,到頭來(lái)卻總是很出彩,“我總覺(jué)得有人不喜歡你不重要,前提是你心中知道你想成為什么樣的人,以后別人會(huì)認(rèn)可你就好了!

  身為鋒芒畢露的“風(fēng)云人物”,高中時(shí)的周思成并不為群體所接納,但高三某天的一個(gè)機(jī)緣巧合,卻為今天留下了一段愛(ài)恨交織的泛黃記憶。

  一個(gè)長(zhǎng)相平、沒(méi)人愛(ài)的土胖娃兒,平生第一次被人牽起手,雖然只是用來(lái)搪塞別人的幌子,但是觸電的感覺(jué)卻足夠讓周思成無(wú)法自持,甚至說(shuō)出了“我牽著你的手就不想再放開”的蜜語(yǔ)甜言。沒(méi)想到偶像劇般的假戲真做真的就此應(yīng)驗(yàn),他們?cè)趶V場(chǎng)上用唇語(yǔ)交談,也曾許下“背你去爬岳麓山”的諾言?墒朗伦冞w,考上湖南大學(xué)的周思成不得已與對(duì)方分手,失戀的苦痛讓他每次走進(jìn)岳麓山腳的湖大都心思郁結(jié)。

  能讓自己不生氣的辦法只有一個(gè):逃離校園。但對(duì)于依舊不能說(shuō)話的周思成來(lái)說(shuō),校園外的一切都是那么可望而不可及,他本可以窩在宿舍睡懶覺(jué)、玩游戲、看大片,但為了早日擺脫周身的土氣,為了有朝一日可以穿上李維斯的牛仔褲,他義無(wú)返顧地投身“詞!,將英語(yǔ)視為救贖的稻草,一天十三個(gè)小時(shí)的背誦近乎走火入魔。

  但就是因?yàn)檫@一年的拼命,周思成擁有了旁人無(wú)法企及的詞匯儲(chǔ)備,這無(wú)疑是一個(gè)“變壓力為動(dòng)力,化腐朽為神奇”的成功范例。如若沒(méi)有當(dāng)初失戀的刺激,或許就沒(méi)有如今的“英語(yǔ)大王”,在他看來(lái)“不會(huì)有一件事或者一個(gè)人讓你幸福,反而那些錯(cuò)過(guò)的人和錯(cuò)過(guò)的事兒給的那些指引,讓你去找到正確的事兒和正確的人”。
