A Comparative Study on the Metaphors in Chinese and English Love Proverbs
Abstract
Metaphor is traditionally viewed as a particular rhetoric device. However, it is not enough just to study it as a rhetoric means or a linguistic phenomenon, for metaphor, as an important means of man’s thinking, is involved in human cognitive process. Proverb, as an important part of linguistic, has rich cultural connotation.There are many differences between Chinese and English in cultural experiences, social customs, life style, thinking way and so on.Based on the comparative study between English and Chinese, this research reinforces some theories of metaphor: the cognitive nature of metaphor, working mechanism of metaphor. This thesis analyzes the commonalities and differences of metaphors in love proverbs between English and Chinese through comparative study on metaphors in English and Chinese love proverbs. Moreover, this thesis researches the causes of differences of metaphors in love proverbs between English and Chinese from a cultural perspective. That is to say, the causes are related to different cultural experiences, classified as origin of civilization, economic pattern and eating and drinking custom in English and Chinese.

摘 要
隱喻歷來被認(rèn)為是1種特殊的修辭手段。如今隱喻研究已超越語(yǔ)言本身的范圍，人們開始從認(rèn)知的角度來研究隱喻的本質(zhì)。諺語(yǔ)是語(yǔ)言不可分割的1部分，具有極豐富的文化底蘊(yùn)。中西方在不同的文化背景下，民族傳統(tǒng)、生活方式以及思維方式等都有著諸多差異。本文采用對(duì)比分析的方法并借助于現(xiàn)代隱喻理論，如：隱喻的`本質(zhì)、隱喻的功能機(jī)制，著重于英漢愛情諺語(yǔ)的隱喻內(nèi)涵，分析其相同點(diǎn)和不同點(diǎn)并主要從文化角度來分析英漢愛情諺語(yǔ)隱喻異同的原因。本文指出不同文化背景、經(jīng)濟(jì)模式、生活習(xí)慣導(dǎo)致英漢愛情諺語(yǔ)的差異，同樣影響了英漢愛情諺語(yǔ)的形成及其發(fā)展。
