Have you ever been to the countryside?
I’m a city boy. I don’t think I would survive even one night in the countryside. It’s too quiet, too dirty, and too tacky. I’m sure it would drive me nuts.
Do you like living in the countryside?
I grew up on a farm and moved to the city where I had my tires slashed, mailbox stolen and even had food stolen off my barbecue grill. I moved to the suburbs where my house was burgled. How I wish I were still on the farm!
What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in the countryside?
I live in the country and I love my place. I lived in the city for a few months and it wasn’t my cup of tea. My advantages of living in the country are that it is peaceful and quiet and you have all the privacy in the world. You can see the stars almost every night, as opposed to the city. I really see no disadvantages of living in the country.
What are the differences between living in cities and living in the countryside?
I’m proud of where I came from. I was born and raised in boondocks. There’s no congested traffic, polluted air and fast-paced life. I love my hometown! Would swap it only for heaven.
The difference between the relationship of neighbours in the countryside and that in the city?
I personally think people in the cities have bad relationships with neighbours. They are impolite, aloof and most of them do not even know the name of the people next-door, while rural people share their lives in many aspects.
1.Do you think it’s important to help others?
There’s an old saying, “You reap what you sow”. I believe that if you are nice to people, they will be nice back, or at least they are more likely to be! I’m not sure this always works in practice, but this shouldn’t put you off trying.
2.Can you give me an example of helping others?
Yes, indeed! I recently had to help carry my friend’s mother-in-law down several flights of stairs and into an ambulance. She had had an accident and broken her leg the day before and was unable to walk, so I was brought in as an extra pair of hands.
3.Who taught you to help others?
In my opinion, you learn qualities like this from your family, and I’m no different. My mother has always been a role model for me and she inspires me. She’s selfless and compassionate, willing to drop everything to help other people.
4.Do you like your neighbours?
To tell you the truth, I rarely see my neighbours, but we have a perfectly good relationship. We might pass each other on the stairs of my apartment building and exchange pleasantries once in a while. Occasionally they may play loud music or make noise, but I think we’re all guilty of that from time to time!
5.Do you like to help others?
Yes, I enjoy helping others. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a good thing to help people and quite often you can make a difference to someone else’s life without having to go massively out of your way. What’s more, there’s a real feel-good factor of lending someone a helping hand.
1.How many hours do you sleep every day? Why?
Mostly 6-7 hours. For me, I still need about 8-9 to feel really alert throughout the day. If I sleep any less than 6 hours I will feel tired the next day.
2.Is it necessary to sleep enough?
Yes. Coz your body and more importantly, your brain need to take a break. This can really only be done properly when you're asleep. Your body rests, takes stock of its functions and carries out necessary repair and restoration work on the body. If you're constantly on the move, with no sleep, your body will be unable to do this.
3.Is taking a nap important?
The desire for a short nap during the day does not arise out of laziness, rather the need for the body to rejuvenate. Napping is a pleasurable yet brief period of sleep when our minds and bodies can take a break. Though many judge it as a pastime for children or the elderly, napping can benefit people of all ages.
4.Do old people sleep a lot?
I think so. But in general, they don't need much sleep, I think. Although the majority of elderly people that I see do sleep much, it is out of boredom rather than necessity.
5.Do you think staying up late is a good thing?
I think staying up late is an enjoyable activity for most. Just be sure to get a little sleep. Besides, don't do this regularly or else you will get dark circles under your eyes. Also, a lack of sleep can cause serious health problems.
Do you prefer group-work or working alone?
I honestly don't mind working in either setting. You may think that working individually means you'll get things done quicker and with less hassle, but at the same time you may struggle for ideas and inspiration.
What are the benefits of group-work?
It can be useful to have more than one pair of eyes and ears working on a project. Group work allows a greater range of opinions to come to the fore and also shares the work around so the result isn't just dependent on one person.
Did you have any experience of group working when you were young? How about now?
We would occasionally have group projects when I was at school, but when it came to final grades we were mostly judged on individual work. Now that I am older and have a job, I work in groups much more regularly. I guess at school group work is about promoting teamwork, whereas in the work place it is about putting that teamwork into action to get the best result.
What is the most difficult part of group working?
Obviously working in a team leads to a greater number of ideas, but also opinions. It's great if everybody agrees or is willing to listen, but sometimes there can be a clash of heads when two or more people don't agree.
What kind of people would like to work in groups?
I think the sort of person who likes to work in a group is a good team player. They don't think they are better than other people or that their ideas are any more relevant, they are a good listener and are willing to get their head down and work hard for everybody. They might also be level headed and keep calm in heated situations.
Do you like science? Why or why not?
I love the world of science because studying science gives me the opportunity and provides me the tools to understand the world around me in great depth. Without scientific research, we would have no idea how forces of nature and natural resources can be used for the greater good. We wouldn’t even have electricity!
What do you find most interesting in science?
I think the region of physics and astronomy is a very interesting part of science. I am very curious about what is beyond planet Earth, and even beyond our solar system. As a result, I really like science fiction comic books and movies like Interstellar that explore the possibility of life away from Earth.
Is there anything about science that you don't like?
One thing I dislike is the misuse of science. For example, I think the discovery of nuclear energy was a phenomenal scientific advance but since then it has become used in the nuclear bombard and therefore poses a major threat to the world in destructive capabilities, raising the stakes of international conflicts.
What science did or do you learn at school?
My school science teachers were great people and they made the lessons fun, so, as a result, I remember a lot of what I learned, even though it was a long time ago! The biological experiments we did are the most memorable part of school science classes.
How has the science that you have studied helped you?
Although I haven’t ended up working in a science-based industry, my science classes helped me develop valuable analytical skills that continue to help me think about how things work – whether an electrical appliance, a car motor or the inner workings of living plants and animals, those classes helped me understand how different systems work.
1.Do you often read newspapers?
I think reading a newspaper is definitely my favourite past time. I do not read everything but I make an effort to look at headlines and then my favorite columns, such as entertainment, fashion, technology etc.
2.Which do you prefer reading, magazines or newspapers?
I prefer reading magazines because they usually contain more varied articles which are of better quality. Since newspapers are published more frequently, there is a tendency for them to have more errors than those which are published once a week or once a month. Content in magazines is more timeless, while news is no longer news the following day.
3.Do you think it's important to read newspapers? (Why?/Why not?)
Newspapers are very important. I still like reading the paper. I believe it is easier to absorb all the news rather than having it hyped and glamorized by TV or being made up a put on twitter etc. It’s your responsibility to stay up-to-date on what is happening in your country and in the world.
4.Why do (you think) people read newspapers?
Because we need to be informed on the latest news. I can read news on the Internet, but there really is something to be said for having a real newspaper in your hands with all of the news in it. I don't have to constantly click around, it's just a smooth turn of the page.
5.What are some methods that newspapers use to attract readers?
There are many tricks, bold headings, attractive advertisements, insights into the article, catchy phrases or sentences to get the readers’ attention. Also different features for other readers i.e. gossip, fashion etc. Coupons or vouchers are also attached sometimes.
1.Who are more important, the teachers or the students?
Well, they are reliant on each other – you can’t have one without the other. Teachers are important in the present, without them students would have no one to learn from and guide them. However, students are important for the future, as they will grow up and go on to educate the next generation.
2.What can you learn from teachers?
I think it’s vital that we can learn a lot from our teachers. After all, that’s their job. Personally, I was blessed with some fantastic teachers during my school days. They taught me not only academic skills, but also skills that I could transfer to everyday life.
3.Why are interesting teachers and students important?
As I see it, a good teacher has to grab students’ attention and keep them engaged. A lot of students don’t want to study and start to lose concentration in class, perhaps daydreaming or starting to fall to sleep. Equally, trying to teach a room full of students who are not interested must be very demoralizing to a teacher.
4.Do you want to be a teacher?
Since I can remember, I have always had aspirations to be a teacher. I feel it’s a noble profession and I like the idea of passing on my knowledge to a new generation of pupils. The long holidays that teachers enjoy would be the icing on the cake!
5.Which teacher impressed you most when you were a student?
I will always remember my English teacher, Mr Hu. His enthusiasm and command of the language drove me to become better and inspired me to study hard and reach my goals. What impressed me most is that he would go above and beyond to motivate us and help us realize our potential.
