On Word Conversion in Translating English for Science and Technology

Abstract

As a special type of writing, EST has its own features. Thus in EST translation a variety of methods and techniques are employed. Here in EST translation into Chinese, meaning takes almost absolute precedence over form, so that techniques of word conversion are widely employed which concern making changes in language form for faithful transference of meaning. Combing the features of EST with the difference between English and Chinese as well as applying the translation theory, this thesis discusses the use of word conversion in EST translation, with emphasis on the conversion rules between various parts of speech, including the conversion into verbs, conversion into nouns, conversion into adjectives and conversion into adverbs.

摘 要

作為1種特殊的文體，科技英語有其獨特的特點。在漢譯過程中必然會使用多種翻譯方法和技巧。在科技英語漢譯中，意義總是比形式重要。因此，詞類轉換這種翻譯技巧就被廣泛采用，因為它通過詞類形式上的轉換來達到內(nèi)容上的忠實。本文結合科技英語的特點和英漢雙語的差異，在翻譯理論的基礎上系統(tǒng)論述了詞類轉換這1重要翻譯技巧在科技英語這1特定語域中的具體操作及應用，重點論述了轉換為漢語動詞，轉換為漢語名詞，轉換為漢語形容詞和轉換為漢語副詞。
